if you signed a fixed-term contract, according to law, you will have to pay the rent until Dec unless you sublet your room to a third party. You will also need to acquire a permission to sublet from your landlord, basically he cannot say no because you have the right to sublet.
You might not need to pay for the utilities since you will not live there to actually use the utilities. It would be unreasonable for you to pay for sth which you haven't used for.
People don't take it seriously when they sign contracts in Australia and it causes a lot of troubles.
Locals LOVE to threat us for saying "i ll see you in Court or I ll see my lawyer." But, in reality, going to see a lawyer may cost them more than they could get from you, and going to Court may take longer than they thought and it's expensive. So...Don't back off...try to get some legal advice...
