A police spokesman said a home owner went to investigate the sound of smashing glass at a Petrel Close, Hallett Cove, address about 2am.
"He was assaulted by three men, one armed with a crowbar," the spokesman said.
The victim was later taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with eye lacerations.
The injured man's son, Luke, 20, said this morning he thought the invaders were associated with the so-called Gang of 49, which has terrorised Adelaide for about three years.
Luke said he believed about 10 men burst into the property.
Some ran in to the house and separated, with several going upstairs in a frightening attack.
At least one raised his arm to threaten to harm Luke's mother before warning they would return and "kill you" if the family called police.

"They were very organised," Luke said.
The thugs fled in two Nissan Skyline sedans and stole the family's two cars.
One of the stolen Nissans was found this morning at Torquay Road, Sturt.
Police recovered several bottles of alcohol linked to a break-in at the Holdfast Hotel.
Another Nissan Skyline, registration XUK-409, was also seen leaving the area.
Police patrols unsuccessfully chased the Nissan at Seacombe Heights and then Warradale.
The car was last seen on the edge of city, heading north on Dequetteville Tce at Kent Town.
"The same offenders are also believed to be linked to a break-in at the Holdfast Hotel at Glenelg at about 12.20 this morning, in which 20 bottles of alcohol were stolen from the bottleshop," a police spokesman said.
"The three offenders, described as males of aboriginal appearance, then stole the two family cars, a 2002 red Ford XR6 sedan registration AA958Z and a silver Holden Astra CC-613G," the spokesman said.
Anyone with information on this incident or sights any of the stolen car they are asked to contact police on 131 444 or BankSA Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.作者: 修罗的眼泪 时间: 5-10-2010 16:54
