THE widow of a security guard shot dead in Sydney's CBD says she used to pray every night he would come home safely from work.

Gary Allibon, 59, from the Sutherland region, was shot in the chest by one of four armed robbers yesterday as he delivered cash to a commercial complex on Sussex St.

The Chubb guard and his two colleagues were ambushed about 6am (AEST) by four armed robbers wearing balaclavas and carrying two firearms.

Mr Allibon was shot at close range in the lobby of the building and rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he later died.

Detective Acting Superintendent Greg Antonjuk said he believed the "callous" crime was the work of professionals.

Mrs Allibon said her husband received counselling after he was involved in an armed robbery three years ago, but chose to continue working, despite friends urging him to find another job.
"He just went back and did what he did and life just went on and I'd just thank God every day that he'd come home to me."

"I do believe what goes around comes around, so hopefully there is a justice at the end of this," Ms Allibon said.

They are hunting for a silver Audi, which may have been stolen and are collating CCTV footage from the incident.
